Zippers can be divided into three major parts: the tape, elements and slider.
The slider joins or separates the elements when the zipper is opened or closed. Various types of sliders are available depending on use.
The teeth, also known as elements, are the parts on each side of a zipper that mesh, or engage, with each other when passed through the slider. When the left and the right side teeth are engaged they are called chain.
YKK® tape is manufactured exclusively for zippers. It is usually made of polyester, but depending on use, synthetic fiber tape, vinyl tape and cotton tape are also available.
Metal tooth zippers can be lubricated to allow easier “meshing” of the metal teeth. Zippers are a mechanical device much like a gear. Occasional lubrication of metal tooth zippers is perfectly acceptable. Use a zipper product like Zippy Cool or even a wax, soap or candle to apply directly to the metal teeth. Do not use a spray lubricant. Zippy Cool contains cleaning fluid and lubricant with brush and wax lubricant.
